What is a BMS and what does it do?

The Battery Management System is the electronic circuit that manages your lithium-ion battery. It monitors the voltage of each cell, balances the charge between them, protects against overcharging and excessive discharging, and cuts power in case of overheating. It is a critical safety component.

How do I know if my BMS is failing?

Symptoms of a failing BMS include: battery that no longer charges or only partially, drastically reduced range, board shutting off while battery shows charge, unbalanced cells visible in the Evolve app, or battery that heats abnormally during charging.

Can I replace the BMS myself?

Replacing the BMS requires opening the battery pack and generally involves electronic soldering. It is a delicate operation requiring technical skills. If you are not comfortable, we strongly recommend entrusting this work to Evolve service or a qualified technician.

Why are there different versions of BMS?

Each Evolve battery model has a different cell configuration (number, arrangement, capacity). The BMS must exactly match this configuration to properly monitor and balance each cell. A GTR2 14Ah BMS will not work on a Hadean 16Ah battery for example.

Does replacing the BMS restore my battery range?

If the BMS was failing and preventing proper charging or discharging, its replacement can indeed restore range. However, if the cells themselves are worn or damaged, the new BMS cannot compensate for their degradation. A complete battery diagnosis is recommended.
